  FOUND TREASURE

My mother passed away a couple of years ago and I had to take care of her belongings, especially her massive wardrobe. I only knew that I had 2 good kimonos of my own and she stored them along with her countless kimonos somewhere in the house. My father didn't care much about his wife's kimonos, much less know where my 2 kimonos went.
So I kept digging. After a week of digging, I ended up with close to 100 kimonos to deal with. I was at a loss. But as I investigated for the best solution, I learned that this is what's going on all over Japan now.
Poeple nowadays wear less and less kimonos compare to my parents generation, and their daughters (like me) are facing quite a problem what to do with their late mother's possessions. One heartbreaking story reads that a wardrobe packed with precious kimonos sells less than $10 at any second hand stores. Even worse, some poeple have to pay to dispose them. Throwing away your mother's memories? That's brutal. Definitely, absolutely not right.

  HER KIMONO'S FATE

Although my goal was set to "No waste, no regret", I have little knowledge about kimono or sewing. It's best if I could wear my mother's kimono every now and then, but sadly, I'm way too big to fit in her petit kimonos and there are too many of them. I have to find a way to make good use of them that makes everyone happy.
So this is my to do list for now. : 1. learn how to put on my own kimono all by myself. 2. send mon's kimono to Canada little by little. 3. recycle dirty or damaged ones. 4. sell nice and clean ones to someone who would appreciate them. I think it sounds pretty straight foward.
Before I forget, let me talk about Obi a little. Obi often plays more important role in dressing kimonos than kimono itself. Kimonos eventually get wear and tear but obis, on the other hand, are made very strudy and last much longer than kimonos. And a good obi can make kimonos look even better than what they actually are. So people tend to spend more money on good obis.

  SEW, SEW, SEW!

If you have any good ideas for my project, I'm all open to your suggestions!
